company
Paul decided to join me at Biola tonight. I have been in the habit of going really late since it is so nice outside in the middle of the night. We pretty much duplicated what I did the last time I went to the track. Alternating walk a lap/run a lap. We completed a bit over 2.25 miles. Yea us! It was nice having someone I knew out there with me. Usually there is a collection of other Biolians on the track at any given time of the night. Tonight however we were the only two up there. I am glad Paul came along as I would not have wanted to stay long being alone. We talked, had our Ipods and had a good time. Afterward we stretched and laid on our backs staring at the sky.

Slacker
So last time I went to the track I walked 3.5 miles. This time I only completed 3 miles. The difference was I decided after my warm-up lap I would try jogging and see how far I could get around the track without stopping. I surprised myself because I completed a lap, when I finished u2 was playing on my ipod Beautiful Day. And boy was it. I followed up my jogging (slowly) lap with a walking lap. I felt pretty good after that so I figured why not try it again. I jogged (again slowly) around the entire track for a second time. When all is said and done I walked a lap/jogged a lap for 2 miles. That means that I Cyndi Hutchins jogged a mile tonight! I also walked two miles but that is not as exciting as I have walked 3.5 in one night before. I felt really good afterward as well, I could have kept walking but is late and I figured I should get home.
Update: I am feeling a bit sore today but in a good way, like i used my muscles and they enjoyed it. My quads are a bit tight, and the outside of my calf is a little sore but overall I feel good. I am enjoying my day off, but look forward to walking or jogging or swimming tomorrow!

Barefoot -n- lovin it
I decided it was too hot to wear something on my feet today.
I headed over to BU around 11:30pm and ran on the fake grass. I am not sure how long the sides of the field are but I ran on the outer most part of the grass.
Walked 2 laps
Ran 1 side, walked 3 sides X 4
Ran 2 sides, walked 2 sides X 2
Ran 3 sides, walked 1 side X 1
Walked long side twice

OCF
So today my activity was walking around the fair and resisting all the yummy food. I am sure that we walked at least a few miles. We visited each gate at the fair at some point or another, in addition to walking around and looking at everything. My feeties hurt afterward.

So I did it. I got myself back over to the BU track.
Here is what I did:
Walked two laps, then for one mile I ran half a lap walked half a lap. That was followed up by walking another mile. I figured I would take it easy as I had not done any real walk/jogging for so long.
It felt good to be jogging again.

Swimmin
Our pool looked so inviting this afternoon that I decided to hop in and do a few laps. I stayed in for an hour, apparently a little to long since my face is a little red, the rest of my body is not at all. I still feel drained from being in the sun in the middle of the afternoon. Oh well. It felt great to be in the relaxing water.
The Plan
Here is the website for the Couch to 5K plan.
If you are not on a deadline I would walk 30 minutes for a few days before starting it.
Enjoy!

Drink lots of water, especially when it is HOT!
Those of you who have known me for awhile know that I lived off of soda. In H.S. it was Mountain Dew and Pepsi. In college it was Diet Pepsi and in Grad School it was Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi. So while my choice in beverage was getting a bit better every 4 years I still did not drink water! Since I got strep throat (mothers day weekend)I have been drinking water all the time. I thought I was just a little sick so I figured I would try to flush it out of my system with tons of water. It wasn't just a little sick but I couldn't believe how much better I felt (once I was over my strep throat) by making water my main drink of choice. Your body will thank you, I promise!
P.S. if you dont want to drink tap water a cheap place to get H2O is Cost Co.
a flat of I believe 24 is only 4 bucks.

Kicked my arse
BUT... I completed it! =)
Tonight (July 5th) I began week two day one of my journey. Remember with the couch to 5K plan you walk/run three times a week, anything else is extra. Since it has been so dang hot I waited till the sun was way, way down before going to University. I got there at a little after 11pm and I was suprised at how many folks were out at this hour. Guess I am not the only one who doesnt want to bake in the sun.
Begining the new week means moving up from a 1 min. run to a 90 sec. run and a 90 sec. walk to a 2 min. walk. I was on the track and walking or running for 34:30 min. tonight. The first 3 sets really kicked me hard. OY! The second set went by much faster and my body felt looser. Here is what I did.
5 min. warm up walk
3 sets of 90sec/2min
5 min. walk and water break
3 sets of 90sec/2min
3.5 min cool down
For a total of 2.25 miles
The reason I worked out longer tonight and didn't walk any farther is because I was walking much slower on my middle 5 min. walk so I didn't go very far.
I also ended my session with about 10 minutes of stretching and looking at the stars

Doah!
I didnt get a chance to run yesterday since I was out helping Bradley, and then when I got home it was shower, get everything together and go pick up Paul to get to the BBQ Block Party on time. However I did do some lifting of heavy boxes and some small children. I also ran after a ball a couple of times, and I mean RAN! So at least I wasn't sitting on my rump all day. Right?

Getting better all the time
So after three days of run/walking and swimming I took two days off, not planned days but from the time I woke up I was out the door and busy doing. I was sad, I thought about trying to find a spare minute to just do part of the routine but alas I couldnt.
Tonight I did my third and final workout of week one (you can tell when someones a teacher, they start their weeks on Monday instead of Sunday). I started out with a 5 minute warm-up then continued with the run 60 seconds/ walk 90 seconds. I felt much better tonight than I did on day two of the couch to 5K plan. I completed a mile in 15:15 which for me is fan-tang-tastic. I walked a whole lap and drank half a bottle of water. Then I started the second half of the run/walking and completed my second mile in 16:34 not bad. So in total I ran/walked 2 miles and 1/4.
P.S. It also did feel better when I was doing the running part to be on the University track instead of the treadmill. I think I will keep it to walking during my extra days on that thing.

another day, another workout
so sadly today was tougher than day one. i began with my 5 min. warmup then i began the program of run 60 seconds walk 90 secconds. i was way tired by the end. i wasnt sure if i was going to finish. i missed one of the start times for the running part so i extended the next run time by 30 seconds. anyways. i dont know if it is because it was so hot or i did the workout earlier in the day but it felt like i hit a wall half way through. i think i am going to run outside for my next program day which is Saturday. i will do some form of excersice tomorrow, i just havent decided what bike ride, swim, 30 min walk.
anyways. to cool off after my workout today i decided to swim for a bit. i ended up being in the pool for an hour and a half. some of that time was spent talking with God but a lot of it was also just doing laps.
i think we need a better treadmil which is why i am going to try doing my running on Saturday outside. the strip you run on is thin and i have miss stepped and almost fell both forward and backward. also the rails you can hold on to are to close so that if i want to swing my arms at my sides. we will see what happens.

Today
well, with this program you are supposed to do their workout 3 days a week, which would mean i was supposed to not do anything today. but, i have so much energy that i couldn't just sit still. so i did a brisk 30 min. walk and swam for an hour again. i walked 1.51 miles today, yesterday it was 1.63 but there was some running involved with that one. So if i was to multiply that out it would take me an hour to walk the 5K my goal is to be able to cut that time by at least 15 minutes i would prefer to cut it in half. only time will tell. off to do some cleaning around the house.
Yesterday
So I started my "Couch to 5K" workout plan yesterday. OY. I am not really sore but during the workout it was tough. I have not been in shape for oh about 7 years. When I couldn't play softball anymore I sort of took a defeatist attitude and never really thought about the fact that if I wanted to keep my body the way it was that I would need to continue working out in some capacity. Anyways. Yesterday I did a 5 min. warm-up walk followed by a 60 sec. run then 90 sec. walk for 21 minutes. To finish I had a 4 min. cool down walk. It was so dang hot that immediately after I decided to go for a swim. I did some laps and just enjoyed the cool water. When I got out I realized that I had been in there for an HOUR. Oh well, swimming isn't like a work out to me, it is a reward. So yeah that was day one. Go me! I am hoping in a few weeks I will look back at how pathetic I was on day one and see that I am making progress.

25 yrs. in the making
For as long as I can remember I have been fat. I was chubby as a child, chubby as a child, overweight as a teenager and obease as an adult. For one year in college I was in the best shape of my life. I was playing collegiate softball, but I screwed that up as I didn't do well enough in my classes to stay on the team the following year. I am dedicated to changing that. Today is the start of an uphill climb. I know that it is something I have to accomplish. I want to live a long and health life. I am willing to do whatever is necessary.
Blog Reason
I am starting this additional blog for one reason only. To catalog my struggles and triumphs while training for a 5K. Cate has awakened in me a wanting to do more, be more. I have joined her in the Race for a Cure which will be Sept. 24th, 2006. As of today I have started a workout plan called "Couch to 5K" From those of you who read I am looking for encouragement and accountability. Thank you all for your support.
